Polaroids from the Edge

Before selfies, instant photographic gratification came by way of Polaroids. There was also something of a ritual in watching the image appear before your very eyes.  Polaroids also permitted people to take images they might not otherwise. There was no lab to see what you photographed. No negative that copies could be printed from. These aspects help melt away inhibitions (and perhaps better judgement) and a culture of creating “dirty polaroids” became something of a phenomenon. Today these old photos conjure up something of a scandalous past that by modern comparison seems nearly innocent. Gone from our daily lives, new technologies have replaced the once popular instant camera. Now we can take and share selfies and photos with our phones and send them around the globe in an instant.  Apps even permit you to retouch your images.

With the surprise success of our Fetisch Klinik images and the number of clients who book private sessions with something of a nostalgic “naughty girl” theme, we decided to create some sets to do a special with this look. To take it further we are going to focus on the sort of photos you’d imagine if you found a shoebox full of naughty polaroids you weren’t supposed to.

We are even going so far as to shoot these sessions with a single light source (OK maybe 2 at the most), a “hot light”, just as the majority of the old Bettie Page bondage images were made that are now classics.

During this specially priced weekend date we will have a female assistant on hand to directly aid you during your session. As always, and especially for this session, significant others or friends are permitted on set for your comfort and peace of mind.  If you decide to book this session around this special but on a weekday (slightly higher pricing) Nicole of Making Faces Professional will be available to assist after styling is completed.

As we approach the date we will share more images of the final set but it will include many elements shown in the sample photos here.

As you can see you don’t need to be naked or show a ton to still be naughty and sexy. Make it whatever you choose!

Devilbliss Motel

Devilbliss Motel.

Let your imagination wander. Think of all the movies and books where rendezvous in motels and hotels take place. Visualize the rooms with their commercial furnishings and decor. Imagine those roadside shelters from a bygone era before huge multi-national chains dominated the landscape ushering in the end of the “mom and pop” establishments. If you love things from the past and ever stayed in such a place it can be a mixed memory. In their heyday these motor hotels (mo-tel) were wonderful places to stay. As they fell out of favor most took on another face, with falling patronage and little money for upkeep and repairs they began to be priced at a bargain and became home to other types of quests who weren’t quite the travelers of their golden era. In cinema they became the very places illicit activities would occur.  I have always loved Motels, be it during their height or their fall. These days, examples of them in their original state are extremely rare. Many were subjected to great atrocities, like renovations that ripped them of any original character. When you do manage to find one it’s very exciting indeed. I’m not alone. There is a small group of travelers who seek out non-chain lodging. It’s why B&B’s and AirBnB have become such big businesses. Why not the Mid-Century Motel business? There’s a website I’ve worked with in the past that is a hub for this sort of thing too, check out http://travelretro.comtr_logo-top

So, originally with no great example of a motel like this near Devibliss Studios I felt I would end up building a set to create my own. One thing that became evident though was that certain elements were proving very difficult to attain. At least to do this as I feel it MUST be done. I scoured the region once more looking for an actual remaining motel that might serve as the set for this series. Amazingly I found one not too far away. I paid it a visit to see if it would work. I was so excited after seeing it in person. This was it.

We are returning to this amazing relic February 18th with a limited number of spots available. Check-in is 1:00 so this limits how many sessions we can schedule. While we have not placed a premium on this shoot to account for the room rental fees we will be tied to a strict deposit and cancellation policy. Deposits can not be refunded or transferred to another session.

Land of Love Sessions

We recently held an invite-only session at a resort in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. We rented a room that featured a round bed, in room heart shaped pool and a two story champagne glass shaped Jacuzzi. A classic couples getaway destination.

The ladies that joined us had an amazing time and the photos so far have been a big hit with all who’ve seen them.

So we are going back. February 4th 2017!
This is a unique situation from a planning standpoint as it relies heavily on participation. Why? The rooms are not inexpensive. Frankly we have these priced such that in reality we ourselves are only making as much as we would if someone came to Devilbliss Studios and did our entry level $250 classic pinup shoot. The price difference is wholly in the room cost (when everything settled the pre person portion of the room fee as over $110).  In order for this to work we require a $100 deposit which is non-refundable or transferable and we need a minimum number of participants. If we don’t hit the headcount and cancel the session, all deposits would be refunded.

How about those samples then?

New Pricing Options – New Editing Options

For some time now I’ve reviewed the websites of countless photography studios trying to ensure the shoots we offer, at the prices we offer them, are among the best value you will find anywhere. Through the process I’ve learned a lot too. I have been able to see why so many of our clients comment about how very easy we are to work with. Accommodating. Reasonable. I’m amazed at the policies I see from quite a majority of studios too. So many offer their services yet though you hired them to create imagery for you… they own the photos. ???  I know that’s been a practice for a long time but to me it’s always felt it would like be hiring someone to build a deck on my house but after everything was said and done…. they own it. How does that work? I understand the logic though, if they legally own your photos, and you agree to that… then they can charge you marked up prices on prints or products. Heck they can even charge you again for the very photos you paid them to take. Think that’s crazy? It’s true, some will list a price for a session but then another fee that’s required just to get the photos. Has to be confusing since many repeat that requirement over and over on their websites. And when you read language about copying photos from a proofing gallery as being “stealing” and they will refer you to their lawyers you can quickly see why they want to own those images.

The other item that’s been a tough thing to navigate, and I know it probably is for most customers as well, is that when considering your value on a session it’s never an apples to apples comparison. One studio may include this, charge extra for that, include so many edits as well as things you don’t normally put a value on automatically. It is confusing to say the least.

So. Moving forward you’re going to see options with the shoots we offer. With these you’ll be able to more clearly compare our sessions’ value, see what you get for your money and be able to put together what works best for your budget. Options. More options than you’ll find anywhere.  Not every session will have the same options or have the same pricing, there’s different factors and costs. But many people will find they may be able to take part in more sessions than they were able to before.

With this will also come some discussion. A big one being edits, the retouching of photos. When it comes to most modern studios it has become a pretty accepted practice that photos are processed or retouched after the session. The thing is, there are different types of edits. Just as you can go to a salon and get your hair done for a nominal price, you can also go to a salon and drop a lot of money on a style. So a blanket statement of “editing” is nowhere near a universal commodity. This will be a topic for another post which I will link here when it is ready.

In a nutshell, what you will begin to see with sessions offered are pricing points that let you decide what services you want. Here’s an example (click to see larger):

This is a set that is currently available in the studio. If you were happy with what you could do on your own with Makeup and Hair, you could set a Shoot Only appointment, arrive ready to shoot and an hour later be on your way with a data card filled with hundreds of images for only $175 + Tax.

Want the expert touch of Making Faces Pro for your Makeup and Hair? Choose Style & Shoot which adds an hour, her skills, and everything the Shoot Only package got you for a total of $250 + Tax. This means you can do the session and later decide if you wanted edits and how many. Edit packages will be available with quantity discounts as well.

Want to dive right in and get some discounted custom edits all at once? Then choose the All Inclusive option and save! When I have the full editing options available people will be able to choose between custom edits and automated edits. Prices for certain sessions will vary slightly  based on the number of custom edits provided.

Shoot Only sessions will mainly be weekday sessions in the studio. It would not be possible to offer them when on location, or doing a themed weekend session. Other offerings may have additional options as well. For instance the Detective Agency where a Pulp Fiction edit might be something you want.det

Some sessions will really only carry one option, those that are very focused and set up to allow us to offer exceptional pricing.

With these options and the editing options Devilbliss Studios will have more accessibility to more people. It also goes a good way towards people being able to clearly understand packages and what they get for their hard earned dollar as well as make it easy to compare our sessions’ value.

Every single session still gets all your photos on an SD card the moment we finish shooting with FULL copyrights to those images. These are YOUR photos. Love Them, Share Them, Own Them.

Our referral credit of $25 per new person you refer that shoots with us and books a session of $250 or more and our repeat client discount on sessions of $250 or more still applies.

People can’t get enough of them. We can’t either. We’re very excited to announce we have confirmed our next great Hot Rod Session. This time we take it on the road and travel to Middletown Delaware where we will be hosted by One Off Rod & Custom. Below are some samples of their shop, as you can see it’s no  small operation. While the specific cars shown may not be what is on hand during the shoot, we know we’ll have plenty of great rides to use as the perfect backdrop for your session. Below the shop are some samples of prior Hot Rod work by Devilbliss Studios.

The session is on the deposit form now. Click here to book your spot. When you do, indicate in the comments if you want your session to be Style and Shoot (where you pay less and order edits later) or All Inclusive where you get an edit package at a discount.  Repeat clients get a $25 discount on all sessions over $250 which would not apply for Style and Shoot but would for All Inclusive. We can also no longer transfer full deposits from any location settings to other shoots due to cancellations. The spots are limited and we can not make up for them at the last minute.

Sled Fest 2017

This will be my 6th time shooting at Old Sled Works and the 2nd time the shoot will take place during Sled Fest. With that it’s a great way for those attending and taking part in the pinup contest to get their styling done and shoot prior to the contest, if you book and schedule early of course.

No other photographer has shot at Old Sled Works as many times or as many people (by a large large margin) as I have. In fact I was the first to convince the owner to permit it at all and subsequently encouraged him to make it available on an ongoing basis. The entire introduction to the pinup community in part helped launch Sled Fest itself. Over the years since though the work in planning and liability involved with photoshoots (hundreds of dollars in damages later) and the owner has decided to no longer permit many to use the site for photography purposes. I am grateful my track record of treating the place like it was my own has meant I am still invited to do so.

This session will sell out, especially now since we’ve instituted our “Choose your package” pricing which means more people than ever before can afford to shoot there with us. DO NOT DELAY if it’s something you’ve wanted to do. It’s a great event to attend, a fantastic contest to take part in and a wonderful bit of nostalgia to use asa a backdrop for some amazing images.  It’s on the deposit form right now. When you book, make sure to note if you want the Style and Shoot or All Inclusive session!

Session is April 29, 2017

Very exciting news. A new shoot location. One that has never been shot before, one that is exclusive to Devilbliss Studios!

I’m calling it Mid-Century Marvel because the home itself is an amazing example of Mid-Century architecture. Built in 1957 I believe it is a larger home for the period as it was built for an eye doctor in central Pennsylvania. As a matter of fact he co-invented the soft contact lens. This very home had a guest apartment and clinic area where visiting celebrities and dignitaries would visit, stay and seek the owners renowned expertise in the field. Foreign heads of state would stay there, domestic titans of industry, even Bill Cosby, though these days that fact is not what it once was.

Regardless. It’s a showpiece and we have it for a day.

The photos I have here do not do this justice but I think you will get the idea. Spots are very limited. As with all location sessions there are no options for self-styling options and wardrobe can only be arranged with prior planning for you specifically.

And now, the photos!bann0019
You enter through these monster doors. Imagine yourself in a gown in front of it!

The living room and this vintage sofa.

Who wouldn’t look smashing standing or kneeling in front of this TO DIE FOR liquor cabinet?

The library… first an amazing Eames chair reproduction, Hellooooo Mad Men. Next lets talk about that carpeting.bann0027 bann0022

This fireplace is one of those that faces into the living room and the library… it’s much more impressive in person and will be when I get my gear in place.

TRAVEL THE WORLD, in the privacy of your own home. This bedroom is covered in vintage (they weren’t when they were put up ironically) travel posters.  Not shown is the master bathroom which I hope we can access as well.

As this is a couples home and we are their guests attire for the session must remain tasteful and restricted in certain areas.

This will sell out, get your deposit in soon!
